Dear participant,

on the occasion of the eLearning Africa conference we will have the opportunity to collaborate on May 22nd – 23rd, 2006. This letter informs you about how to get prepared for the workshop.

Please see the workshop agenda for the detailed schedule.

Objectives: The workshop aims to assess and to develop media literacy and didactic skills of educational staff having the mandate to develop eLearning / blended learning services. Intended outcomes of the workshop activities are:

  • to practice common computer based work activities
  • to make hands-on experience of basic planning activities when designing instruction, especially for eLearning / blended learning scenarios
  • to apply teaching methods
  • to use asynchronous communication tools for eLearning purposes
  • to edit content on a ZMS based content management platform on the Internet

Method: You will work on several assignments, guided by a Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) and facilitated by a set of templates. All results will be published online on the eLearning platform. Each participant will have a computer work place. The coach(es) will provide for support.

Preparation: To achieve good results within the allocated working time, please prepare in advance:

  1. Digital images: In order to design a personal home page please bring a digital portrait photo, and preferably a digital logo of your institution or other images related to your job and eLearning projects.
  2. Definition of your eLearning service product: We need to know which educational product (e.g. an eLearning course unit) you have to develop in the near future. In the forthcoming eLearning workshop, you will be asked to specify which project will become engaged in (e.g. name of the product, target group, market demand, scope, budget etc.). Please clarify in advance which eLearning product shall be produced by you. This shall relate to your real, current job tasks and your responsibility within your institution.
  3. Preparation of your media and internet supported instruction: On the first day you will author an instruction and in the afternoon of the second day the Internet based delivery and learner support will be simulated in a role play. In this practice you will work together with a peer and take over alternate roles of a tutor (providing your training) and a learner (participating in your peer´s training). The instruction that you will develop should relate to your job and be of practical relevance for your fellow participants, too. It must include an assignment (e.g. a discussion, an individual task or a group work). Learning time should not exceed 60 minutes (including the access and study of the learning materials and the delivery of the assignment). Needful preparation before we meet: please decide on a topic for your instruction. Look for and select suitable resource material (e.g. a copy of an article, a web page, an instructional video) you are planning to use for your course module. Bring these resources in digital format with you or make sure that they are accessible (e.g. on the web). Please start thinking about a possible assignment for your peer already.

Final note: you will benefit from this workshop only if you bring your digital training resources so that you can work hands-on on the further development of your own media/Internet supported course module. Internet connection will be available, however bandwidth may be constrained.

Please contact Mr. Zelalem Sintayehu in case of any questions.

I am looking forward to collaborating with you soon.

With kind regards

Sebastian Hoffmann, workshop facilitator
